Matrix reimprinting

Matrix reimprinting is a step on from EFT (tapping) see here for more information about EFT. This is how Karl Dawson (the founder of Matrix reimprinting) and Kate Marillat define it. "Simply put, Matrix Reimprinting is a technique that connects people with their past traumas and core beliefs and elegantly enables them to transform (these memories) into supportive platforms for their lives.

Whereas EFT is like watching a movie, matrix reimprinting is like being in a play."

Matrix reimprinting is a way of reprogramming your beliefs, by accessing your memories which will change your mindset and ultimately your reality.

EFT is great for discharging negative energy, moving forward and gaining clarity. Matrix reimprinting, however, is a wonderful tool for changing the memories and traumas that have given rise to the subconscious beliefs that we live our present lives by. These subconscious beliefs are what determine our thoughts and the actions that we take in the present.  So this means that no matter what we consciously resolve to do, our thoughts and actions will always be undermined and determined by the underlying unconscious beliefs that we once made based on the events which happened to us in our past, which we often repress because these events were too painful for us to deal with at the time.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right." Henry Ford.

This quote emphasises the connection between mindset and your actions. What do you believe deep down about yourself? Do you even know your deepest beliefs? Matrix reimprinting is a great way to find these beliefs and then change them so as to move on in the area that you would like to progress in.

You may have heard about the iceberg model of the mind. The tiny bit of the iceberg above the water is the conscious mind, the thoughts that we are conscious of. The huge bit of the iceberg that we can't see that is below the water is the subconscious mind. This is made up of the events from our past, from conception (some may even say past lives) and all the beliefs that we have made those events mean as well as all the things that we have learnt. Everything that has ever happened to us is stored in the subconscious mind. It has been shown that the subconscious mind controls around 90 to 95% of our mind.  Our subconscious mind is almost perfect, unlike our conscious mind which is far from perfect. Our subconscious mind stores and accesses information and ensures that all thoughts we have fit the beliefs which are stored here. One way of characterizing the subconscious mind is as "the gatekeeper of your comfort zone" (Brianna West). It acts to protect is from living through those traumas again.

Matrix reimprinting is the idea that just as a memory or event can be imprinted on a person's mind, any memory can then be reimprinted so as to remove its negative effect on your current day life. When things happen to us, our subconscious mind retrieves the information about a similar event that might have happened in our childhood, so if we react unconsciously to this event, it may be that were are reacting like a 7 year old child, rather than how we would consciously like to be acting as a supposedly wiser adult.

The idea is that when we experience a trauma, we experience the freeze response, which is caused by our realization that there is no way out of this situation. What we do at this point is dissociate in order to avoid feeling the pain of the moment and part of us splits off to protect ourselves from the enormity of what is happening. We may even repress the memory for many many years. This happens far more to children as they don't have the experience or the resources to deal with such events. When this happens, the part of us that experiences the trauma is called the ECHO in Matrix reimprinting. The ECHO holds on to that trauma and the memory itself is stored in the subconscious. The belief that was unconsciously made as a result of the trauma is also stored and then we get triggered later when similar events happen, although we don't actually know or understand what is happening to us. This repeats until the trauma is resolved somehow. It is believed that many issues that people suffer from are actually reactions caused by the freeze response having happened at a younger age which have not been effectively resolved or discharged. Because holding these achos in our field takes energy, the more unresolved traumas (ECHOs) we have, the more stressed we are, especially when these traumas are triggered repeatedly.

So in matrix reimprinting we go back into memories and use EFT on our ECHOs to resolve the trauma. We are then able to reimprint the memory so that the underlying negative beliefs that we made these events mean can be changed and we can move forward in our present day lives without these erroneous beliefs holding us back. Doing this is not denying that these events happened, but what it does is dissolve the negative energy around the trauma so that we can change the perception of the event and the negative belief that we made as a result of it. Our aim is to release the energy of the trauma so that we can move on and heal ourselves. This is a very gentle and safe way to deal with big traumas, little traumas and various feelings and pains (all of which may have some type of trauma at their root). You then get homework of related positive affirmations and visualisations to consolidate the reimprinting process. This is the beauty of the brain being able to rewire itself and create new neural pathways.

So the way I like to use matrix reimprinting is to help mums and dads deal with underlying beliefs about themselves so as to have the confident and gentle birth of their dreams or to make the postnatal period flow more smoothly.  Another way I find matrix reimprinting a wonderful tool is for mums and dads who have had less than ideal previous births and would like to have a better birth this time around.

A one hour session of matrix reimprinting costs $120. Click here to make a booking and then email Jo at for a time.
